The Thompson Middle
School is a multi-story solid wythe masonry structure with a slate roof and
double hung windows. The age of the building coupled with years of overlooked
maintenance, as well as a growing school population, lead the city of Newport to
proceed with a comprehensive renovation and addition project.
Peterson Associates scope of services included a complete evaluation of the
exterior envelope systems, including existing roofs, walls, and windows.
Detailed cost estimates were provided to the owner with our report. Peterson
recommended removal and replacement of the existing slate roof system and
masonry repairs to the existing exterior walls. Large numbers of the existing
slate roof shingles were able to be reused in the rear of the structure in order
to keep associated work within budget. New copper flashing were installed
cuncurrently with the roof system. Peterson Associates provided the project
architect with details and specifications for building envelope systems at the
new additions to ensure that the waterproof integrity of the building was
maintained.
