The Atlantic &
Broadmeadows Schools are both one and two story buildings costructed in the
1950’s. More than 50 years later, the buildings still had there original steel
framed windows. The original windows were extremely energy inefficient and a
source for water leakage due to there state of deterioration. Excessive heat
gain was occuring through the windows during summer months on the Southern and
Western exposures of the building.
Peterson Associates services on the project included the design of the new
window systems for both schools. Air infiltration and water resistance
requirements were carefully considered during the design, as to provide a window
suitable to resist the severe conditions. This is especially important due to
the buildings close proximity to the coast. The new windows were designed in a
different configuration than the existing, as required to meet modern building
code requirements and the clients needs. Insulated windows with high performance
glazings were used to produce an increased energy efficiency for the system.
Plans and specifications were prepared based on the accepted design. The
construction documents included a tightly coordinated phasing schedule that
provided for the window installation in assembly areas of the schools
(libraries, cafeterias, gyms) to be done during the fall/winter. This was done
to allow classes to be held in the completed areas while the classroom
windowsare installed.
