The Boston Housing
Authority owns and manages approximately 64 housing developments throughout the
city of Boston, of which 37 are designated as elderly developments. Water
leakage through the exterior walls as well as cracking and deterioration was
occurring in many of the buildings, prompting the Housing Authority to initiate
a project to make repairs. Peterson Associates was selected as the Project
Engineer to complete a survey of the existing conditions and to prepare plans
and specifications for the required repairs. The project included work at 15
Elderly Complexes, making up nearly half of all of the developments.
As the engineering consultant on the project, Peterson Associates conducted a
detailed investigation and prepared a report about the conditions of the
exterior masonry walls and related construction. The exterior walls of the
buildings were found to be in need of more repairs than were originally
budgetted for. Based on this, Peterson Associates prioritized the repairs,
allowing the Housing Authority to complete the most urgent repairs and within
the established budget amount. The masonry repairs were bid under two phases.
The construction work of both phases was completed with the buildings fully
occupied, requiring extensive temporary protection and careful consideration to
project scheduling. Peterson Asscociates assisted by acting as a liaison between
the Owner and Contractor to help coordinate these efforts.
